peter
One of the things that have astounded me in my travels has been the occasional opportunity to see old battlefields and cities where great battles have been fought. Here is one such shot taken at the Citadel in Budapest. From memory taken with an M4-P but I cannot recall which lens. My guess is 50mm sumicron. Anyone else with pictures of war remains?

peter
Apologies - I was not aware that using the attach file option on this site only provides a link to the photo not a direct display of the photo. I have not uploaded the above photo to the web so you will have to click on the above link. However, here is another photo which is hosted at photobucket which I have previously shown on this forum, taken at the same location:
leslie_cheung
I really doubt these for taking by a 50mm. The FOV is too wide.
james mitchell dc
Peter, I really like the second shot, both times I've seen it (actually three times--in person in 1988). I agree that both shots look as if taken with at least a 35mm lens.
peter
It is entirely possible that it was taken with a 35mm summicron as I had the 35, 50 and 90 with me. It was taken in 1998 though so 9ish years is a little too long to recall. cheers
peter
James you were in Budapest in '88? I would be interested in your impressions. When I was there it was still trying to shake off almost 50 years of communism so there were many photo opps of buildings still bearing the scars of 1945 and 1956. I liked the feel of the place but then again my father was Hungarian and although he grew up in and around Tata he spent the war years as a young man in Budapest, so I am naturally somewhat biased. peter
I very much like the trench photos. I have just finished a book on the history of Australian forces on the Western front. What a dreadful bloody waste. As to the photo above it looks very like Budapest to me. The cathedral in the background appears to be the main one in Pest. Thank you both for sharing them. Here is a "ring in" ie it was taken not with Leica but a Nikonos but it may interest people. As I remember it was a Japanese sea plane in a small base in the Shortland Islands off the south tip of Bogainville. Thats me in the shot. Photo taken in 1986 I think.
