expats
I recently purchased a Canon 400D and am shopping for a zoom lens. Which is the best option -- the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM or the EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM? I realize both are inexpensive and not the best. I live and work in China and the exchange rate is killer when it comes to buying good gear. I have been borrowing a Sigma 28-300 f/3.5-6.3, but the images go way too soft after 150 mm. Any help / advice you can provide is well received.
rainer_t
Steve, the 'good' options for reasonable prices are the EF 70-200/4L (nonIS) or the EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS USM. Eventually a used EF 70-210/3.5-4.5 USM or EF 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM, but honestly non of the two you mentioned. Rainer
phule
Save up and buy the 70-300 IS.
tom_matus1
The real questions should be.... What are you going to use it for and how much time will you use it? How deep are your pockets?
expats
My pockets aren't too deep, I'm a poor English teacher. I'm just looking for decent quality without a giant hit to the pocket book.
anders_carlsson
I'd go for the Di version of Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6.
anthony_hicks
I would go for a used Canon 70-210 3.5/4.5 USM, a great compromise between price, weight and usability. Image quality is fine and the focusing is a dream. I have had mine since 1990, it is my longest serving lens. Other lenses come and go in my bag, including heavier, faster tele zooms, but this one just keeps coming in handy.
Doug Obert
Another vote for the Canon EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS USM. Very good lens and bang for the buck.
chuck_c_charlottenc_
Steve, Another vote for the Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens. Excellent Image Quality for the price. //Chuck
synnacdesign
As some of the people here pointed out, what type of pictures will you be taking? At zooms of 300, the IS feature can be most helpfull when shooting freehand especially for wildlife or sport fotography. However you can compensate the IS by using a tripod and saving yourself the added price of the IS.
