In the past two days I learned to make contact sheets from 35 mm color film

with my Epson 4870. Nice beccause I can make the contact before going into my

darkroom for a printing session.

The Epson using the bundled Epson software can be configured to make a scan

of 4 35mm 6 frame strips. It also allows me to select pictures from the whole

4 strip prescan, therefore I do not get all the area between the frames. Crop

the first row, then duplicate the crop on three other strips. Select all and

the scanner makes 4 individual pictures, one of each strip, sequentially all

by itself. Replace the first two with 24-30 and 31-36. Then make two more

pics.

It is best to scan using a color correction saved for each type of film. The

correction also will save the dpi setting, color debth and crop. I save using

a crop of the first row and duplicate the crop just before scanning.

You can past them on a white page, using the move tool. Then flatten.

Another cleaner way is to use CS2 picture package. Custom make an 8x10 sheet

with six 1.25 x 9.00 pictures. Load the individual strips. and save the

package.

Can you believe a few years ago I made an inquiry to a lab about making colour contact sheets the traditional way for all my rolls of colour film? (I have never had access to a colour darkroom).

I think I may even do something like this for my RAW files. Then file the sheets with the proper archive DVD. This way I can make creative decisions away from the computer.

Thanks
