mbyrne
I want to start offering online ordering to my clients. I was looking at Smugmug, does any one have an opinion on them? Is there anyone similar to what they do? Is it worth the $149 per year and 15% of sales?

conraderb
mike - I went with pictage for two years and just switched to smugmug pro. I like SM b/c their print prices are very reasonable and the galleries are much easier to navigate than pictage and easier to upload and everything is much more customizable. I'm a big fan of SMP so far - I believe they take 15% and $150 a year, which is much better than pictage's $50/$99 a month. simplephoto might also be exactly what you need. try both of them - SMP has free 14 day trial. tonylarcombe
I have to say "yes" to that, they are worth it. The site gives you the ability to set your own prices, per gallery if you wish, they give also you the options of customizing the site to match your own website My customers have been very happy with the prints, and the customer service is excellent. zofia
I used SmugMug with all my portrait clients last year, and it was fine. I got a couple complaints that the photos were a little low contrasty. Since they go straight to the client and I don't see them first, it's a little scary. This year I've switch to http://www.instaproofs.com, which is just a store front. I'm having a professional lab (http://www.whcc.com) print and deliver to me. I send them to the client after I've proofed them. It eases my control freak mind. Z
michelle a.
I know that a lot of people here like SmugMug. I personally have never liked the "Presentation" or the "look" so to speak of the place. I know that may seem weird.... and it's hard to describe verbally... plus like Zofia, I'm somewhat of a control freak and prefer to handle my own print orders through WHCC. I started using Instaproofs.com in November of 2006. There is no annual fee, and they take 15% fee on the order before taxes and shipping. 6% on prepurchased credits for a client..... eric_scott1
Hey, I just posted a question topic above, but this seems like a relevant discussion - does anyone know of a reliable company that does this in Canadian dollars?
aaron_lee___minneapolis__m
Mike, I have been using Smugm ug for nearly a year now. They are great! You can customize your page with your own CSS, HTML & javascript to make it exactly what you want it to be. They are human, respond quickly to emails, and several of their employees (including head honcho) blog. You can also use your own website domain with a simple option. However, with all of the customization they offer, their plentiful options they have built-in look great and I haven't felt the need to change things around! The one thing that *used* to be lacking was the ability to edit a photo before printing.. well, they now have a "proof delay" option where you can delay the printing a set number of days and you can replace the image before it gets printed. $149 per year is CHEAP compared to the other services. You get *unlimited* storage and bandwidth - this means you have a very reliable off-site backup for basically no money at all! Also, the 15% commission isn't on the gross dollar amount of the sale - it is on the NET amount (only the markup of the prints, and they don't charge on the shipping portion either). That is a very big contrast to other companies. I think they upped their free trial to 14 days now, without a credit card. I highly recommend it.
