An alternative path for going wide - the Ricoh GR1

Here's a couple

of shots taken with the Ricoh GR1. I

vaguely recall that it cost me less than USD 400 in excellent condition. So, if

you consider performance, cost, weight and bulk having one of these

trigger-happy in your pocket looks like a pretty good alternative to getting an

M-compatible 28mm lens to me, especially if you take its attached

AF/AE/winder-body into account...
Don't get me wrong - working with just one

system (f.i. multiple M bodies and a row of interchangeable lenses) has its

merrits, but I felt perfectly equipped on the wide end with this little gem on

my New Year walks about Capri earlier this month.
BTW, the film was Fomapan

T200 souped in TMax and came out perfectly flat when dry, so the negs scanned

beautifully. Oh, and I shot horizontals, too, but haven't found the time to scan

those yet... ;-) Enjoy.

For several years that was my kit exactly - 50 and 35 on the rangefinder with the GR1s for my 28. Not only is it nice to have the wider lens for much less than the leica 28, but you get a second body as a back up along with it! A lot of nice features on that camera as well. Unfortunately I dropped mine in the Pacific and now it's dead. Anyone need one for (non-electronic) parts?

There's nothing objective about a camera lens - especially a wide. It can 'draw the best out of the situation' when pointed at subjects like this and handled as well as this - or do something else : distort a normal looking situation into a nightmare.

So, I would like to know what is funny in the statement.

And the GR-1s is a tough little camera. Mine has been dropped on to rocks, tiled floors and concrete at least 5 times. It has some scratches and a small dent, and the viewfinder needed a big repair which cost 80 GBP including a full service. But it has travelled most places with me in the past 6 years; indeed, I've bought a nice black one for use on special occasions. AC
