dxphoto
Hello, the brand LH-3 costs $75 so I am thinking of a generic hood (as a rubber one only cost 10-). I have a LH-2 and i know it screw on the outside of the lens instead of on the filter thread. Are these generic hoods always mount on the filter threads? Is there any disadvantage on this? And good generic hoods (Kalt, hoya, b+w, plastic, metal?) to recommend?? Thanks a lot.
frederick_muller
Use the hood that came with the lens. The lens is pretty flare resistant to begin with. The standard issue hood is "good enough" in most situations, probably better than a 3rd party hood. If you are shooting with light sources in the frame, no hood will be enough anyways. Robin Smith
I agree with Frederick, what's wrong with the hood that comes with it? I like it - it's not so big it blocks the v/f and I have yet to have any flare with mine. Robin Smith
dxphoto
Thanks for the reply and help.. I was ahead of myself since the lens is still on its way here and I've not seen it yet. I have a 35/2.5C and the hood came with it was useless. I had to buy a LH-2. I was assuming the original hood came with it was the same. It's good to know the info from you guys. Thanks. astral
Classic Nikon hoods for the 50mm lenses (especially clip-on ones) work fine. Nikon HR-4 (rubber) is fine too, and any 52mm cap will fit in front of it: it is not obtrusive. The LH-2 does not fit the Nokton, which does not have a outside thread. jtk
I use a Nokton and I don't agree that the standard hood is adequate. At my altitude (one mile or more) glare is a routine daily issue. Might not be true for someone who lived in GB, in a big city, under a bridge or in the jungle. If you think you need more of a hood, you need more of a hood. I do. I need a vented version, in fact, not a rubber one, because a rubber hood of adequate size would obstruct my view.
roland_r
The only problem with the standard hood is that it intrudes in the viewfinder on M6 or M3. I use a stack of two empty 52mm filters. Roland.
