fredrik_calabrese
if your not hiking with your tripod weight is a good thing, weight is stability. I use an old Gitzo studex tripod i got off ebay for 70 $. Its sturdy, i have used it with medium format gear, and even a 560mm Leitz tele lens. I prefer a three way head for everything other than portraiture.
louisekennedy
I spent a fair amount of time at the photo store checking out Gitzo's and Bogen's. the Gitzo is really nice, and I can see the difference, but for the amount of time I will use the tripod I decided to take the advice here and go for the Bogen 3021 B Pro. And I walked away with the Bogen / Manfrotto 488RC2 Midi Ball, quick release. Both together for around 300. The Kirk's do seem great from what I can see online and the raves here, but I will wait until I really get more use out of this tripod. I brought tripod home and put the camera onto it, and it's great fun. I can already see the huge value. So incredibly sturdy. I'm very happy with my choice and thank you all for your good advice, some of which I will no doubt use in the future. But for now I will stick with the Bogen ball head, seems like a good fit.
