richc
I've got a 1950s Elmar 50/2.8 that needs a bit of attention: does anyone know how to remove the front element? I'd like to send the element to Arax Photo for recoating, but I understand that they only accept elements, not complete lenses. harry__florida_
Careful counterclockwise use of a properly sized lens spanner, firmly engaging the two little diametrically opposed slots in the front retainer ring, will let you remove the ring and then remove the front element. If you do not have the right tool and a firm steady hand, any camera repair shop will have. If you slip, you scratch!
christopher_a._junker1
Check previous posts for lens work done by John Van Stelten. He'll clean, polish, recoat and reset the focus on your lens. Also contact Sherry Krauter, she may know of a source for new front elements rathre than recoating. Troll
If it just needs recoating forget it. They are assembled at the factory with highly sophisticated optical equipment, and you're going to lose a lot more by DIY reassembly than you could possibly gain by recoating. Just start using a good lens shade.
