dankapsner
Anyone using "old glass" on an RD-1 or M8? In particular I wonder about 50mm Summar. Any posted samples anywhere? Thanks, Dan
james mitchell dc
Dan, nothing that I want to post, but I was playing around with my M8 in my apartment and noticed a big difference in the 50mm Elmar 2.8 of 1958 and the 50mm 'cron of 1969 when shooting a framed poster and magnifying crops of the shots. In terms of sharpness and color rendition, I liked the later 'cron a lot more, but at full frame the older Elmar had its charms too. So long as you're not obsessed with camera or lens tests, use the older glass. At least for me, it retains its film-comparable charms. (Remember, this is personal use and opinion and very limited.) adrian bastin
I'm looking forward to buying an OLD M8 to put my Summar on. For the kind of work I do it's my favourite lens on film so I don't see any reason it should be different for the M8. But like you Dan I'm eager to see some results. frederick_muller
I've done a lot with a Canon 50mm f1.2 on my RD-1s, and that's a 1956 optic. Love the results.
frederick_muller
In fact, I also use the old Canon 35mm f2 Black on the RD-1s. This lens is even smaller than the 35mm Type 4 Summicron and just as good. With this lens on the RD-1s the camera is almost pocketable, and a perfect street shooter. Philip Freedman
I have used an old 35mm f2.8 Summaron on my RD1. The results are very pleasing since the lowish contrast helps to avoid blowing the highlights. It does not give quite the sparkle of the 35mm f2 Asph but for converting to B&W it is very suitable. frederick_muller
I shot this the other day with the Canon 35mm f2 Black at a range of around 10 feet and cropped in. ISO setting on the RD-1s was 800, with 1/3 stop over-compensation, giving an effective ISO of 640. I haven't done formal experiments to calibrate it, but my sense is that either the RD-1s is tuned slightly to underexposure, or the sensor is a bit less sensitive than rated, hence the compensation.<div></div>
