ck_kc
Help please ! which of the following is a better standard lens(new to DSLR) AF-S DX 18-135mm Zoom-Nikkor f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF lens(KIT LENS THAT COMES WITH THE D80 PACKAGE) or Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 ? I only have a few hours, until I decide, since the package I might get comes with the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8. thank you sincerely.
BrettPrucha
Those are two very different lenses. Thats like comparing apples to oranges. That being said you can't go wrong with the 50 f/1.8. I love to use it as a short telephoto portrait lens on my digital body. If that is your only lens though you are probably going to be finding yourself wanting something wider and maybe longer as well depending on your subject matter and shooting style. A more versatile prime lens would be the 35 f/2 or Sigma 30 f/1.
nilesullivan
Get the 18-135, It will allow you more flexibility from the start.<p>Purchase the 50mm 1.8 when your budget allows. It?s only $100 and will make a nice low light companion to your zoom.
leicaglow
The 50mm f/1.8 is a superb lens. Buy it until you have time to figure out which zoom is right for you (I've heard talk that the one you're interested in is not the sharpest lens in the bag). It will help you understand why you bought a Nikon in the first place.
tumble2113
What's the price difference, the deal with the 18 to 135 is probably best to buy as the kit, it's hard to get outside the kit. As everyone has mentioned the 50 1.8 is a great lens but it's only 100.00 so I think the zoom is best buy in the kit and the 50mm as the add on. briany
Agree with Jim. I was a big fan of the 50mm f/1.8 on film cameras but I don't find it all that useful on a DX camera. If you find yourself shooting the zoom at 50mm a lot, you can pick up the 50mm later for under $100.
CharlesBecker-Toronto
agree-get the zoom lens now due to its versatility and you can always add the 50mm later. Enjoy your new camera! cb :-)
ecarter
Brian - I also liked to do a lot with the 50mm in film - I found that I missed it when I went to digital, but picked up a Nikon 35mm f/2D lens - pretty much the same feel and also a very good lens in its own right. Something to think about.
briany
Thanks, Eric. I did pick up the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for similar reasons and have been pleased with it as well. I would recommend it or the Nikon 35mm over the 50mm for a DX camera, unless one is into portraits.
