5D vs. 1Ds

Due to a long course of events that I won't bore anyone here with, I am finally

making the leap into digital. What I need is someone who has actually shot with

both the 1Ds (the 16.7 MP) AND the 5D (12 MP). It would be nice if someone

could post a cropped image or two. (Preferably cropped the same mount to show

same area of image and how the image looks being cropped like that.) I know the

price differences, and the features, on paper. But both models have a few

things I really like on my film bodies. (The 1Ds for example has Bulb?not so on

5D. There are more examples. This is just one.) So if anyone here has shot the

1Ds, then shot with the 5D, or other way around. Please let me know how you

thought they compare in your world of photography.

FWIW, I was irritated that Canon didn't just recycle the 1Dsmk2 sensor into the 5D and spent a lot of time with my nose on prints from various comparison shots: I couldn't find anything where the 15% extra resolution was enough to make a difference that could be seen on a print, even with the prints next to each other and my nose on the print. (This was for A4 crops from 13x19 prints.) So I agree with the Dpreview comments. Still, the extra pixels will give you a bit more room for cropping, leaving you with a nice 13x19 in cases where the 5D might be thinking about getting iffy. The extra pixels do give one more room for cropping, but for US$3500, I'll put in a bit more effort into framing carefully.

 

Also, have you handled both cameras? To my hands, the 5D is just another boring 35mm camera, whereas the 1D models are nearly unusable clunkers that make my medium format equipment seem light a svelte and really comfortable to shoot handheld. Some people love the weight, though. Go figure. If the 1Dsmk2 were the only FF digital option, I'd stick with MF film.

The 1Ds doesn't have 16.7 megapixels. Are you thinking of the 1Ds mark II?

I was going off of the Canon website for stats. And yes (sorry again) I do mean the Ds mark II.

Thank you for the links and articles.....still thinking....the RGB settings seem to be coming out as really nice to have.
