sgpix
I just switched on my less than 1 week old 5D this morning and... nothing. Assumed batteries dead (perhaps didn't 'sleep'), but they were fine in 20D. Removed battery grip and tried with battery in body. Nothing. Tried 6x AAs in battery grip magazine. Nothing. Tried changing lenses and cycling power switch a few times. Tried changing modes. Nothing. All of a sudden it switches on when I move switch from on (with scroll wheel) to just on. Anyone else come across this - do they 'all do that, sir'? Or is this a warranty issue?! BTW - camera had been used fine 24 hrs ago and has been on spare room bed (heating is on) since. PuppyDigs
Once in a while my cellphone and computer do that. Could be solarspots, a rash of microwaves from nearby cell users or a ghost in the machine. However if it's intermittent, it darn hard for service to fix it. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
sal ali
Never had that problem but the aperture dial on my 5D wasn't working right when I bought it. It was stuck at 30 seconds. Turns out it was the connector on the battery grip.
leopoldstotch
A circuit board could have short circuited. Its known to happen, in fact it happened to my employers 1D. If the camera is under warranty, get Canon to fix it. Before you do though, make sure its not just the contacts that need to be cleaned.
gaetano catelli
there were intermittent power-on/power-off problems with the battery grip on my 20D. i don't miss it. also, once when it was only a few months old, i tried to review a shot while the buffer was still writing to the CF card. the whole unit conked out for about an hour -- then came back to life as mysteriously as it had gone dead. i don't use the battery grip anymore (no need to -- i just carry another battery or two). and, i wait until the camera writes to the buffer before reviewing pictures. no problems with my 20D ever since. nor with the 5D i now use in addition to the 20D.
