greg jansen
Hi New to large format. I have a Gowland wide (65mm) 4x5 I just purchased. It has a Graflok back. Question is if I get a Kodak Ready-load holder, can I remove the ground glass and hood mechanism and leave it off? Do the Graflok slider things hold the ready-load holder in place, or do I still need the sping back to hold it in place? WOuld love to leave the glass and hood off to save space/weight. Don't need the glass to focus- fixed focus camera being so wide. Thanks!
john_smith207
If you are thinking of a quick load holder, then the spring loaded ground glass is needed to hold the film holder in place. The graflock sliders are there to hold in medium format backs, binocular viewers etc. You can probably ditch the hood and get a lighter viewing cloth to see the image. Steve Beyer
I have not seen this camera but I believe that you would need to keep the spring back unless you created something your self to replace it. You probably could remove the glass and the hood but I don't think this will save much weight. If you are trying to get a really big point and shoot you might want to look at the wooden Hobo cameras or Fotoman 4x5 point and shoot.
dgfassett
The Graflok six shot back is a handy little device for speeding up the shooting speed of a hand held 4x5 camera. However, it would not be the best choice for use with view cameras. The back has, on occasion, not held the film is perfect back focus popsition.
