jams
I need help! Can someone tell me how to connect the D80 to the SB-800 wirelessly? Thanks!
chris_leck
If the D80 works similarly to the D200, you can put the built-in flash in 'Commander' mode and the SB-800 in 'Remote' mode. It's in the manuals -- the key part should be in the D80 manual. You also can attach a PocketWizard to each. You lose TTL but gain distance and reliability. frank_skomial
"you can put the built-in flash in 'Commander' mode and the SB-800 in 'Remote' mode. It's in the manuals -- the key part should be in the D80 manual." - this part is OK. but after you have done the first part, the socond part: "You also can attach a PocketWizard to each." - would not do any good for you, or Chris needs to explain better what he means ? When a SB-800 flash is placed in remote mode, in the iTTL/CLS commander/remote control setup, the socket on the side of the remote SB-800 is disabled, UNFORTUNATELY. Conneting Pocket wizard there would not have any effect as the remote SB-800 would not trigger it. There are other possibilities with Pocket Wizards, in other modes, where you could loose TTL, as explained few times in this forum, and perhaps the last statement in Chris' response refers to? chris_leck
The PocketWizards weren't the second part of the set-up, they are a completely different method of wireless flash compared to Nikon's CLS/iTTL. True, PocketWizards require a different setup, which I didn't explain: Typically, you set the SB-800 to manual mode (not remote) and select the output power. You don't use the on-camera flash, particularly if there's a PW in the hotshoe.
