james_taylor11
Just received a 300mm F/4 L IS lens. I noticed that there is some substance that looks like an adhesive (lock tight?) on the threads. This is on the outside threads and I can see it inside the lens on the next set of threads down in the glass. Anyone else seen this? Marvin
You might try some Goo Gone or Goof Off.
franklin_polk
If it doesn't come off on your finger, it is probably a substance similar to loc-tite. If I'm not mistaken, its there to prevent the retaining ring, the ring in the threads just in front of the element. (the one that holds in the front element(s)) from loosening and letting the elements get loose. Contrary to the previous poster, DO NOT use goo gone, especially that close to an element, If you are unhappy with it, simply return the lens. m_barbu1
Goof Off will likely remove some of the finish as well. I would use that as a last resort (after scraping with a sharp object, which I wouldn't recommend either).
bobatkins
If it's not causing a problem, I'd leave it alone.
yakim_peled1
Is this a new lens? If so, I'd get it replaced. Happy shooting, Yakim.
