peter
A few years ago I had the chance to visit Hungary. I thought I would share with you some of the images, mainly from Budapest but also some surrounding areas. Taken with Leica and Nikon I am afraid some suffer a little bit in the scanning (cruddy old flatbed) so some are a little soft on screen, although in hard copy prints they are sharp enough - but you will get the idea. I am not looking for critiques; these are just personal snaps I thought I would share. If you want to criticise - kindly keep it to yourself. (I am sorry but there are a few PITA trolls who hang out on this site who love to bait other posters and I really have no interest in interacting with them.) Lets see some of your shots of unusual places in Europe: Budapest itself is still a little off the beaten tourist track many travellers and in addition, the photos here are mainly attempts to capture the spririt of the place without over emphasising the most well known attractions in Budapest such as the chain bridge and the castle: - Which is why I suggest this as being a post about out of the way places. There are a few other shots worth sharing possibly if you are interested but they have not been converted. Maybe I will post them soon if there is interest in seeing them. So here we go: <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o251/peterm1_bucket/Scan20018copy_filteredr.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a> <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o251/peterm1_bucket/Scan20001_filtered_ar.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a> <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o251/peterm1_bucket/Scan20002_filteredcopyr.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a> <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o251/peterm1_bucket/Scan20017_filteredr.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a> <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o251/peterm1_bucket/Scan20003_filteredr.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

terry_m1
Peter, do you know if the hole impacts on the buildings are from World War II or disputes since then? Great shots, meanwhile! Terry

peter
Terry "Peter, do you know if the hole impacts on the buildings are from World War II or disputes since then? Great shots, meanwhile!" Firstly thanks. I rather think that the shell damaged building was caused during ww2 as it is in a building which is part of what is known as "The Citadel" which commands the heights above Budapest. All of this area was heavily fought over in the war during the 7 week campaign between the Russians and the Germans to control the city. After the war of course there was another bloody period in 1956 when during the Hungarian uprising the Russian tanksrolled in and in fighting damaged many parts of the city. In the event this type of damage is still visible and common - or at least was when I was there just before the millenium. (If you look closely at my photos you will see many bullet holes in masonry. I was so amazed to see this kind of damage still evident after 50 or so years I must have shot many rolls just on this sort of detail.) I have assumed that much of the damage is ww2 related however but of course cannot be certain. I have a very evocative photo for example of bullet holes above the door of a synagogue where someone has shot out the lamp lighting the door. My assumption was obvious - this was likely to have been the work of the Arrow Cross (the local fascists) or the SS. If you look closely at the photo of the old gent in the wheelchair there are many bullet holes in the wall nearby. This was also taken in the old Jewish District (District VII) All in all the city reminded me of a lovely old woman who had once been beautiful but was now in her declining years. Lets hope the re-entry of Hungary as a part of Europe will turn this around.
