marc_morris
Can you tell me how i can get the line in his face to stand out more .
roger_smith4
Which line? Try selective sharpening (create a duplicate layer and use unsharp mask on selections you create).Try selective edge sharpening- use a program like Photokit sharpener or search the forum for how to-s.Try creating a new curves layer and set the blending mode to soft light. Fill it with black and paint the effect back in selectively.
roger_kallet
Marc, By *line* if you mean *lines*,that is wrinkles, here's what I did. Levels...right slider to the left until it meets the major white levels... left slider to the right to meet the major black levels...middle slider slightly to the left to darken the image a bit. Contrast...5 Unsharp Mask...118, 1.0, 0 (or adjust to taste). Roger
bwcombs
Usually when you shoot portraits, I am attempting to soften the lines. But here's a sample of a retouch on your image. In PS: Duplicate layer, USM, Erase at 70% most of the face except the facial lines.<div></div>
bill_fouche
Duplicate layer. Set new layer to "multiply." To new layer, add a layer mask consisting of inverted red-channel with contrast increased. Set opacity on new channel to taste (here it's 67%). No sharpening applied. sheldonnalos
Fine tune with curves adjustment layer to try to bring out midtone contrast, Local contrast enhancement via USM 20/20/0 (a couple times), sharpening. Mostly done with curves....<div></div>
marc_morris
Many thanks for all your help . I posted this question after seeing this image . Does it make a difference when using photo shop if the image is shot on colour neg or slide or black and white film .

roger_kallet
Marc, The question concerning color neg, slide or BW. I think it would make a difference because you're scanning three different types of film and I think all would look a bit different on the monitor before doing the PS work. Your second picture looks like the now popular *grunge* look. It was discussed on this forum awhile back and if my memory serves me, one way it can be done is using Levels and moving the center slider to the left.
