rich815
I imagine the main difference between these two lenses feature-wise (other than the 2.8 vs. 4.0 widest apertures) is the Distagon's leaf-shutter and its abilitiy to use with flash at faster than the focal plane shutter's normal 1/30 sync. Other than that is there anything to recommend the Distagon over the Planar in terms of lens performance? Thanks.
gandicarter
The Planar is smaller, faster, lighter, sharper and usable over a greater range of distances than the Distagon. (The Distagon is designed for more distant objects) The Planar also has a flatter field. The main benefit of the Distagon is its shutter, although it will give a bit more subject distance when retro-fitted for macro photography. jorge_jimenez1
Other than that, no. The Distagon design allows a shutter at f4 which could not be used with a planar (even an f4 planar) The planar performs better at the dges than the distagon wide open. rich815
Thanks much for the answers. Seems the main (and perhaps only) benefit is for flash use at higher sync speeds. If either of you have a moment please see my new query here: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00FURK Thanks.
