grant_lupton1
have data re Pentax lens specifications from two sources. Both havetwo entries for 300mm lenses - 300mm and 300mm ED. I assume they areare both SMC (?) The Pentax UK site lists only the former (non ED). Presumably, thelatter (ED) is the older model and no longer produced. Regarding the ED:min focus of 16.4 inches vs 9.8 (non ED) smallest aperture at f45 vs f32 lens construction of 5G, 5E vs 8G, 8E filter size of 77mm vs 82mm* (don't know what the asterisk designates) equivalent 35mm format of 155mm vs 200mm (why 200mm - more elements, better optical performance?). ED references found: would shine in high contrast shots; superb resolution and saturation. Etc. So which is the current model - ED or non ED? If both examples are available, which would be the most expensive? Are they both SMC? Which is better - Ed or non-ED? How does it perform with 1.4x and 2x converters. I'm considering buying a used model from my favourite dealer here inthe UK at around ᆪ350/$630. Fair price for Excellent condition? Thank you for any assistance. Regards, Grant. grant_lupton1
Dear Don, There appears to be some come confusion. The figures in brackets following refer to the Pentax site specifications. I am assuming the lens is the latest version for both sources 1989 from your details, current for Pentax. According to the details from your link the minimum aperture of the ED is f32 (f45) minimum focus 2m (5m) weight 1,650 (1,430) Would you clarify please? Could you also tell me if the ED designation is on the lens. Thank you for your help, Don. Regards, Grant.
grant_lupton1
Don, Obvious, really. Pentax are still referring to the previous model. Why? Grant.
ilkka
Still seems to be some confusion. The 300 ED(IF) lens is new and very good, significantly better than the old non ED one. It is one of the best lenses for the 67 system and one of the best 300 mm lenses ever made. The lens says SMC Pentax 300mm ED(IF) next to a green ring that goes around the lens. It focuses close and smoothly with its internal focusing. I have only tried it with a poor 2x extender and that is not a good combination. I believe the Pentax 1.4 is fine and Pentax 2x would be okay but not great.

mark_smith10
I would 2nd the opinion on the 300 ED version. Having owned both 300 versions, there is no comparison between the two. Having a rotating tripod mount, closer min. foc. distance, internal focusing, and ed element(s) separates the wheat from the chafe. But when carefully used, the original 300 is definately capable of producing publishable images like all 67 lenses. thanks mark smith
