rafikrkamel
Hello everyone:I have a question regarding Extension Tubes to be used on my Nikon D70s and my lenses which are: -Nikon AF 70-300mm G f/4-5.6-Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 D-Nikon AF 28-80mm G f/3.3-5.6 -Nikon AFS 18-70mm f/3.3-5.6 DX I am considering buying the Kenko extension tube, the exact model is (Kenko 25mm Uniplus Tube Auto focus Extension Tube for Nikon AF-D) mainly because i understand that this model provides AF capabilities and metering with my camera and the above lenses. Now I have three questions regarding Extension tubes: 1.I understand that a 25 mm extension tube provides life size on my 50 mm lens, and this magnification decreases the higher the focal length. Does this mean it will not provide any magnification if used on my 70-300mm Nikon G lens? I only ask this as I need some additional magnification when I shoot birds with my telephoto lens. 2.Do the AF and metering capabilities on this specific kenko model will work as advertised or there are some limitation to these two operations on my Nikon D70s body and the above lenses.3.Is there any risk to the mount on my Nikon body or the lenses from that kenko Extension tube as I have never used any NON-Nikon accessories before. Please let me know on these questions, Thank you everyone and have a nice dayRafik Kamel
briany
I have a Kenko tube set that works with both AF-D and AFS lenses, but I've heard reports that newer ones don't autofocus with AFS. All will meter with all AF lenses. Regarding using the tube on your 70-300 for birds... an extension tube allows a lens to focus closer (but it can no longer focus far away). If you're shooting a bird far away, the extension tube will be useless, as it only allows you to focus closer (maybe 1m?). For distant subjects, you'd need a teleconverter (hopefully on a better lens).
rafikrkamel
Thanks Brian for your fast reply, by newer Kenko models you mean the model i have posted on the thread or what exactly? i dont know if this model is considered new or not? please let me know Brian and thanks again, Rafik Kamel
briany
I would assume, if you're buying new, it may not work with AF-S lenses.<br> <a href="http://www.thkphoto.com/products/kenko/slrc-05b.html">http://www.thkphoto.com/products/kenko/slrc-05b.html</a><br> <a href="http://www.thkphoto.com/products/kenko/slrc-04.html">http://www.thkphoto.com/products/kenko/slrc-04.html</a><br> <br> **** I must say that the "Sample Picture" on their page is about as misleading / fradulent as I've ever seen. That's not at All what an extension tube does. Imagine that mountain picture is a poster on your wall -- an extension tube lets you get closer to the poster. It does not make distant mountains look closer.
briany
"fradulent"? Even fraudulent is a strong word, but it's certainly misleading.
vivek iyer
How come the newer ones are not good for AFS, Brian? I would have have thought the opposite?
briany
I would have thought that too, Vivek. I'm not sure what happened. see <a href="http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00EoeY&tag=">http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00EoeY&tag=</a>
kristi_maddox
The newest AF DG tubes are said to work with all lenses, and only the older plain AF tubes have issues with AF-S lenses, hence the reason for a newer version. I have not seen anything (in my recent research on these before purchasing them)that states otherwise.
