Fuji Pro 400 H and 400 NPH

Recommended Posts

Bill,

is the difference in contrast between Fuji Pro 400H and Kodak Portra 400NC really big or not? I've never used Portra 400NC before. On the other hand Fuji claims that Pro 400H is a low contrast film. They even have a sort of 'contrast chart' printed on the box of Pro 400H 5-roll pro packs where they compare the contrast with their other Pro serie films. According to that chart Pro 400H is a low contrast film.

Juergen, I would say that Kodak 400UC and NPH have similar

contrast as scanned on my HP Photosmart or printed by Agfa d-Lab

and Fuji Frontier. Portra 400NC has much less contrast. My wife

always asks, "what happened to the shadows, did the sun go behind

a cloud?" I don't think it's easy to compare contrast across film

speeds, but Ctein ranked high-speed film contrast, as printed on

Supra Endura, like so: NPZ, NHG2, Portra 800, new NPH, old NPH,

400UC(?), 400VC, 400NC, Optima 400.

Pro 400H appears to be very slightly different from NPH. I'm guessing it may have been tweaked for the digital printing era. NPH via Frontier machines tended to produce greens that were vivid out of proportion to other colors, which could be distracting at outdoor weddings. Pro 400H seems to have reeled in the green ever so slightly, altho' the overall look is the same as NPH. Same great mixed lighting performance.

According to PDFs about NPH and Pro 400H on Fuji's website there are other minor differences. The 400H base is slightly thinner on the 120 version compared with 120 NPH. The PDFs note differences in the emulsions too.

Thanks for the 400H info, Lex. I'll download the datasheet and update

the cacreeks.com/films.htm table. Maybe 400H is lower contrast than

new NPH. Here is what Ctein said about contrast of 400UC:

"Extra saturation does not come at the price of higher contrast.

The grayscale contrast of the Ultra Color films is almost identical

to those of their Portra companions... Ultra Color 400 had just

a bit more contrast in the darkest tones, but midtone and highlight

rendition matched Portra 400NC." (I think "a bit" is exaggerated;

400UC shadows seem much deeper than 400NC and similar to NPH.)

Dear All:

I've use NPH almost exclusively in past 10 years.

I have heard a lot of people said that Pro400H is just the rename of NPH.

But my personal experience is that Pro400H's color is shift a bit toward red compare with the old NPH which has a bit more greenish tone to it.

(and I don't like that reddish shift)

Anyone else that felt the same thing?

Harv

I just got this reponse from Fuji:

Thank you for contacting Fujifilm, USA's Contact Center. Please allow us

to assist you.

NPH 400/NPZ 800 was not discontinued, however the name changed to Pro

400 H/800 Z. Pro 400 H/800 Z uses the same emulsion as NPH/NPZ so you

can expect the same great results.

We sincerely hope this information has been beneficial to you. If you

should have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to

contact us again. It would be our pleasure to assist you.

Thank you for your interest in Fujifilm products and services.

Respectfully,
