Interesting or surprising printing tricks?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, has anyone discovered an interesting printing trick that they'd

like to share? Mine was accidental. I was printing on glossy photo paper, but

left the Epson set to "Plain Paper." As a result, the image had a very fine,

even, and quite pleasant grain.

P.S. Better to NOT try the reverse (unless you enjoy pools of ink soaking into

the paper).

Well, if you select the "wrong" paper type in the last Epson printer driver screen you can control how thick the ink is laid down. For instance "Enhanced Matte" lays down more ink that the glossy choices. But as you pointed out, do this at your own soggy risk! This is probably most useful for achieving delicate shades, since too-heavy ink applications have a way of looking pretty ugly.

Never hurts to play around with the "perceptual" vs. "relative colorimetric" choices for

rendering intent (in the "print with Preview/color management" dialogue of Photoshop). And

also trying black point compensation on or off ( although that last makes virtually no

difference in my case).

The rendering intent can make subtle shifts in sky colors, for example. You may find you

prefer one or the other (both get recommended as the "correct" setting, depending on which

book or web guru you read).
