justin_thornton1
Hello I am quite new to the EOS system and I am looking forinformation about which lenses would be good and the best costbenefit. I Have a Canon 20D and as of right now only have a 50mm 1.8II Lens. Right now I am looking at 2 groups of lenses The first group is either the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM orthe Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM I am wondering if the II mark isworth the $90 difference between the two. To me it seams that itsworth it. The Mark II seems better with the sharper MTF chart andFaster aperture. Any advice between the Difference here would be muchappreciated, along with any other suggestions for another lens thatcovers approximately the same range The second group I am looking at is either the Canon EF 75-300mmf/4.0-5.6 III USM Or the Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Again is itworth the $90 Dollar difference The 100-300mm seams to me like thebetter deal with the sharper MTF chart and focus window. Any advicebetween the Difference here would be much appreciated, along with anyother suggestions for another lens that covers approximately the samerange I mostly photograph indoor and outdoor sports for the collegenewspaper. Other subjects include night and low light photography(50mm 1.8 is quite fine for that) candid of people indoors and out. Also general subjects. I have so far had to borrowing a friends reallyslow 28-300mm lens, he is no help on lens selection likes his newfaster 28-300mm and nothing else. If you can suggest any other lens that are not too far over $300 orless is appreciated. Mainly I am looking for a lens(es) that cover the28-300mm range. I would like them to be very sharp and fast aspossible with staying not too far from my budget. I would not mind ifit was 2 or more lenses separately. But sharpness and fast apertureare key, along with build quality. Thank you for your time. I think I may have found some good ones butfeel free to suggest. Justin. rob_murray
These two the 28-105 MkII and the 100-300 USM will be the best. The 75-300 III USM is pretty good too, both will be a little softer at the 300mm end. Get both with lens hoods.
cfimages
I can't speak about the longer lenses, but the 28-105 f3.5-4.5 is much better than the f4.5-5.6 version.
thomas_sullivan
"...indoor sports..."....none of the lenses (or your price range) will do justice for action shots indoors. Need f/2.8 or faster. I have personally done action indoor hockey goalie shots with a 100mm f/2.0 prime lens. Results were very good, but it doesn't have the reach for half court shots at all. Outdoor (daytime) sports you would be ok with the 75-300 f/4-5.6 zoom, but I might consider a monopod also. I have no experience with either lens in this focal range, but the 75mm end of the one I mention may be nice to have. Never know when something considerably closer is going to happen and 100mm on a 20D is a bit much at close range...the 75 would be nice to be able to zoom back to....just a thought. Other than that bit of advice, the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM is an excellent consumer lense...buy it over the other one, definitely.
paul -
<i>"either the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM or the "Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM" I am wondering if the II mark is worth the 90 difference between the two."</i><P>The "II" mark on the f/3.5-4.5 version means that it is the second f/3.5-4.5 version. The crappy f/4-5.6 is a completely different lens, and cannot compare to either of the f/3.5-4.5 versions.
thomas_munch
For indoor sports (and outdoor, if you can get close) I think you'd find either the 85/1.8 or the 100/2 to be a great addition. --tom
henrik.ploug
Cheap zooms are slow and unsharp. You want a fast and sharp lens. Ergo you need a prime. For sports: Canon 100mm f2 For candids of people indoor: Canon 24mm f2,

trex1
Yo Justin (time for an answer from me)! Skip everyone of those lenes. I agree with the last guy who recommended a couple of fast primes. That's what you need. And dare I say a spell checker?
trex1
I think I need a spell checker too by the looks of it!
disneyry
I'm new to EOS as well and I've really enjoyed my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. There have been a couple of shots that I would not have gotten had it not been for the IS. It's a bit more expensive than you are looking for, but I'd at least rent it and see for yourself.
