john_amiet2
Cograts Russ! For those of us without the facility to travel, you might consider posting, at least some images, to stir us up. I will be doing something similar in April. Will be anxious to hear how you go. Good luck
michael s.
Excellent, Russ ! Agree with John that it would be great if, at your convenience, you could create a link for those of us who are out-of-towners and regrettably can't attend. Hey, Russ, do your fans know that you're a/k/a "f/2pac" here on the Forum ? :) Good luck with the show -
working camera
Top effort Russ! As Eric said it's a hell of a lot of hard yacka to put show together. Hope it goes incredibly well. the best C.

j_t3
Well done Russ, The invite looks first rate, I'm sure the show will be a smash hit. In on the Right coast though so I'll have to wait for the posts or a link here to enjoy your work. If you get some time, I'd love to see your work, especially the NYC stuff. Good luck, break a leg...... JT
john_r._fulton_jr.
I won't be out until early April so I'll miss your show. Does the Porfolio Coffeehouse usually have photography or is all media? Good luck with your show.
brambor
Russ or others who have done a show, How do you recoup the investment to print and mount and rent etc... ? Asuming your photos are liked, how many prints do you expect to sell to break even? rb
sprouty
Way to go, Russ. Wish I was on the left coast to check it out.
xcapekey.com
thanks everyone for the kind words...i'll set up a virtual gallery for those who can't attend.... portfolio hosts different shows..not just photography... rene- well...the trick is to keep your costs low...trying to find wholesale prices on mat and frames...i was lucky in that i was able to get 20x24 frames from a friend of a friend who wholesales frames for $12 a piece.... i also have a Logan 750 which is big and sturdy enough to size 30x40 mat boards (the size they come when u buy a box), so that cut down tremendously on mating costs... there is a saying...art is cheap, framing is expensive...how true that is printing the photo seems to be just the beginning of the whole fine art process...a lot goes into the presentation... you also have to do a lot of footwork to get people to come and increase potential buyers....i have been bicycling all around town leaving postcards with businesses, galleries, coffeeshops in Long Beach to make sure the opening reception is packed and to create a buzz... i just ordered another 1000 postcards that should come today and I'll do the same all this week until the reception.... i'm also preparing 2 portfolio boxes to show to curators and collectors...one i will send out and the other i'll keep to show personally....all my photos are mat with window hinges and photo corners and all my pictures are printed the same size, so everything is modular....i can repurpose a portfolio to the tastes of a particular client buy quality materials that you can reuse...esp. the mat. Alpharag is great stuff....you can clean small smudges off of it with a white eraser lift dimples or dings with a swab and some water, scrape off deeper marks with a razor, etc., because the mat is solid cotton rag and can take some abuse.... for this show to break even, I will have to sell 2 pieces ($500/per)...the second the show is done, I'm moving the images to a high end furnishing store that wants me to do a show there...after that i'm planning to repurpose the framing to do a show in a gallery, etc., i'm just starting to really exhibit...i've done one solo show in the past and lots of group shows...i'm getting laid off from my job and have decided to take the time to really go at photography, so a lot is riding on the success of this show and the following ones (like food in my mouth :). ok..sorry to be so long winded.... brambor
wow. thanks for your time to answer this. I certainly hope this works for you. Good luck with everything. Looks like you are putting good energy into this and have guts to go and promote the show from all different angles.
nels
Russ, Congrats! Do you have an online gallery of your images that I can look at?
furcafe
Congratulations, Russ! What you say about the mechanics/logistics of putting on a show by yourself is so true (1 reason why I'm keeping the day job!).
xcapekey.com
i'm building an online gallery as we speak...i actually hadn't thought of it but there seemed to be enough interest...hmmm...i may send the link to curators as a sort of sneak peek in lieu of sending boxed prints.... i'm scanning the images today and I should have it up and ready by tommorrow... c.chen...yes, doing shows is sort of thankless work unless you're established i guess...most of the footwork and expense is on the artist....i'm still waiting for the day when i don't have to hang my own phots and the wine and cheese are paid for :) yeah...unfortunately i'm about to lose my day job...so things will get quite interesting in my life, financially speaking...
