regit_young1
Not a big time b/w shooter prior to RF, so I'm still trying to learn about lens vs film vs tonality of b/w... Here's the question, how does the tonality of this picture looks to you?

mattalofs
Looks good to me. What film/developer are you using?
rich815
Nice tones. OOF areas seems a little edgy and rough...what lens?
john_wire
Regit, not a Leitz, is it? Almost impossible to tell from a screen view though. I'm becoming a Leica believer after playing around with my likka Leica Jupiter 8. Regards.
SCL
Good capture of tones. Either you have really short legs or you set the camera on the floor for the picture? In any case a very appealing dog shot. You got the right things in focus and the right ones OOF.
dan d. chang
Leica lens can show the same OFF backgroud
john_layton
Nice - but the dog is nearly overwhelmed by the bokeh. If I were you I'd drop the contrast by about a half grade, bring up the dog and bring down the background - but only by a very slight degree. And watch that white paw! vivek iyer
John nailed it. I am guessing that it has something to do with the limited D-range of your scanner. Is the lens a Zeiss 50/1.5?
jonathan_reynolds
Nice around the dog and its bed, though of course we can't tell how much this is due to the lens and how much the film, development, scanning and editing. The OOF background is dominated by quite unpleasant linear effects. Is this a feature of the lens or the scanner? Are they visible in the negative? derek_stanton2
Digital - Nikon or Canon 50mm 1.8?
bill_marshall1
50 Summilux?
lutz
Okay, since this is evolving into some kind of a quiz (what's in the jackpot?) here's my guess: 50 Industar.
The bokeh is quite busy, so it's definitely not a Summicron. Tonality is hard to judge, not knowing your film/developer/scanner settings. Anyway, I've seen smoother and richer from Summicron/Neopan/T-Max developer and proper PS work. Film could be Delta 400 - but that's just a wild guess... :-)
Rob F.
I agree about the bad bokeh. Also, it looks digital--though that could be because it was scanned (obviously). Could be a trick. Regit, you didn't perchance shoot this with a 20D or something?
terry_rory
I will join the fray. (Nice photo by the way) Lens = Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 Film = Tri-x Bokeh = OK
terry_rory
4000 dpi so I guess it is film scan rather than digital.
watts
50 Nokton?
rj
On my screen, the dog's paw, well above the paw actually, is loosing detail and the dark black part of the dog is just a black blob. Now I know this is my screen because it is a laptop and not very good seeing tonal differences and I am sure in a print you could get these parts to hold detail. If this were my shot, I would do exactly what John says above, bring the background down, especially the door to the outside, it is too white and bright and takes my eyes away from the dog(a very cute dog by the way). I would also bring the dog's paw down a bit, so detail is kept. The bokeh in the background is distracting and I would do something to soften it. Its a good shot and you did a good job of capturing the dog looking at the camera.
knut_schwinzer
O my dog, Regit, don't let us alone so long time guessing without your placet! I agree it should have been a modern fast 50mm- Nokton?Adressing the last post: IS that puppy looking to the camera?! And if or if not, what's so honorable of keeping your lazy, trustful ol' chap for more than some seconds in his favorite sofa? Fed him even ? knut_schwinzer
As for tonality, I do like it, it's very substancial, underlined by the nice sepia tone. Good light!
gadge
40m F2 Rokkor's would be my guess as I have one and OOF can get a bit busy like this. I can't easily make out any individual dogs whiskers and exact point of focus looks to be slightly in front of the plane in line with dog's ear approx the first nail on the paw. Cute though whatever it was shot on.
