babette_ross
Hi, I need to get a circular polarizer for my 17-40. If i am only really planning on using it with my Canon 20D, do i have to get a wide angle specific filter or will the regular one be okay?

Im looking at the Tiffen regular for $70 vs the Wide for $122 and i figure if the 1.6x factor makes the 17 = 27 i should be okay. Or is that faulty logic and it doesn't work that way.

thank you in advance
ed_skibeki
Regular is fine...
kevin conville
On a 1.6x body not only will the "regular" one be fine, you don't even need a 77mm one. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00CO5V
babette_ross
WOW... i have a 72mm one for my 28-135! Thank you!
mcgarity
Now all you need is a 72mm to 77mm step up ring.
kevin conville
Babette (and Larry)- You'll need a 77-72mm step DOWN ring. It's lens thread size first, then filter size.
babette_ross
Thanks, so i started this thinking 122 for a filter and now its 10 for a step down ring. Love that, it usually works in the other direction
kevin conville
Babette, Not to browbeat here, but have you thought of taking $25. of the money you just saved and subscribe to Photo.net? I've been to your page and it looks like you've gotten a lot out of it.
mcgarity
Kevin. Right you are. I did mispeak. Must be force of habit. I have been using step up rings for a quarter century but I have never had occasion to go the other way.
