hugh_crawford1
I was doing some portraits with a 1Ds and a studio strobe with a soft-box and some flags etc. The modeling light was pretty dim and I was having a little difficulty focusing. I didn't want to turn the room lights on because I needed to see the modeling light because the subject would keep moving out of the light. I grabbed my ST-E2 to use purely as a focusing aid and when I attached it the PC socket stopped working. I removed it and the PC socket started working again. Is this normal behavior? Is there a workaround, or do I need to gaffers tape a flashlight to my camera?
PuppyDigs
The ST-E2 is set by default to trigger E-TTL Speedlites. Thus when you mount it in your hotshoe your camera is behaving as if wireless E-TTL Speedlites are triggered, hence no signal to PC cord. If you desire to use the ST-E2 as an AF assist light, you need to disable the flash trigger via custom function. On my 10D it's CF 5.3: Enables AF assist and disables flash. I use it when I need AF assist but don't want the camera to behave as if a Speedlite needs to be triggered. You might give it a whirl. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter

hugh_crawford1
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to give both of them a try.
