tong_sun2
Hi, everyone. I have the above lens but there are some fungus on the 2nd element from the front. I am thinking about opening it from the front and do a cleaning. How can I do it? Anybody has done similar things before? All suggestions welcome. vivek iyer
If you do not have proper expertise/experience/tools, do NOT try it. Among other things, the second element is an ED glass. Softer than the rest! Try irratiaditing it with an UV lamp or in the sunlight (shade, avoid heating!) to kill the fungi.
michael_bradtke
If you want talk to these people they can fix your lens for you but it might be cheeper to buy a new used lens http://www.focalpointlens.com Best of luck Michael
alan_wilder1
A minor point but according to Nikon literature, the front element is ED glass.
erik_loza
Second vote for buying a replacement. 180mm's are pretty readily available on the open market and not very expensive. Though most excellent, they don't have much value as a collectible lens. Shame about yours, tho'.
eugenio.demmenie
Dissect the 180 mm ED only if you are experienced. Otherwise let a professional repair-shop do it (I don't know where you live, but in Holland I would try the Nikon distributor's repair shop or repairman that I know). The 180 mm ED should not be confused with the cheaper and less performing 180 mm non-ED. I don't find the secondhand 180 ED particularly cheap. But is a great performer, probably one of the best Nikkors.
tong_sun2
Yes, it is hard to find an inexpensive, good 180/2.8 AIS ED. Although the lens has fungus, it is still very sharp. Maybe I should just leave it as it is, and not worry about it.
vivek iyer
Alan, Thanks for the correction. Confused it with the new ED IF AF lens construction.
