laurence_smith
Hello. I would like to obtain the semi-wide angle capability of the Flektogon 50/4 for my system. I have heard a lot of great things about the MultiCoated later versions, but not so much about the older "Zebra" version that is only SingleCoated. I am on a budget these days, and am wondering if I will get the same overall quality of lens from the older SingleCoated version. I know that the flare factor is there, but is there any other reason to wait to pay the considerably larger amount for the MultiCoated version? Thank you, I appreciate this forum. shambrick007
I have the single coated version. Works fine. Don't obsess about muti-coating. Just be smart and shade the lens when needed.
paulh
Get the best condition single coated version you can find and buy a lens hood. I've done some shots with mine into the low winter sun and not had problems with flare. I bought a generic wide angle lens shade from ebay.
I have seen comments from people who own or have owned both, and they've commented they cannot see the difference.
Example with the sun with SC 50mm and wide-angle lens shade
Paul
laurence_smith
Thank you much, Sheldon and Paul. Yes, I would certainly shield the lens for maximum dampening of the flare. I really, really appreciate your responses. The image from you, Paul, certainly is a great example, with that hard light coming in off the left side. Beautiful example, and a crisp image indeed. I'm going to spring for the single-coated, and save my hard-earned money. I'll also go get a lens shade to clamp/screw onto the lens. Thanks again you guys! OCULUS New York
For what it's worth, my Zebra Flek 50 had a half-inch scratch in its single-coated front element at about 10 o'clock, probably a half-inch in from edge. NOTHING ever showed with it, and I sold it to a friend (for under $100, same as I paid) and he's had a ball with it, absent any aberations. Think cheap. thomas_kunz
I had both lenses, the "Zebra" and the MC version. Tested them in comparison. I found no difference. So I sold the MC lens.
