70-200 (IS screwed up!)

Recommended Posts

Today I used the 70-200 IS and on mode 1

it kept moving my frame erraticly from left to right, right to left so I had

to turn it off.

I know when IS it's engaged and how it works...I have it on the 600 as well :)

Should I try to clean the contacts on the lens? Man that thing is really disappointing me

the lens is probaby a year old; I turned the 20d off unmounted the lens and put it back

on...

same prob!

Anyone having that prob?

Is pencil eraser good to clean the lens contacts with?

I have to see the day I bought it, it may still be under warranty.

Sounds like your lens may have suffered something similar to Ken Phillips' one:

Since I doubt you have his skills or equipment to repair it yourself (he still hasn't finished the job), I suggest you get it in to Canon - urgently if it's still under warranty. The good news may be that supposedly Canon now has a new design of IS unit for it which is much less prone to problems than the original design. It's aso worth checking when your lens was made:

Lenses made after January 2005 seem to have the new IS unit.

If you really want to read some of the saga behind problems with this lens, try wading through this long running thread on Robgalbraith:

26 pages, and still active!

Thanks for your reply; I read the long thread on gailbraith's forum and most ppl

mentioned camera lock ups, however they did say the IS unit was replaced.

The lens was made in 2004 (US1107) and I guess I need to send it in before the warranty

expires in 5 days (!). I do not get any errors or lockups, just the is "shaking the frame" left

to right, right to left erratically.

I hope they can figure it out since it's intermittent, ( Ijust tried the lens right now and

works fine).
