vivek iyer
I have heard that he collected 1,000 Marks from every family promising a Volkswagen. Most gave it away (I was told by a grandson whose grandma gave the money) knowing that they will not see their family car. So, not many were actually delivered as promised to begin with. The American rocket programme, is that Hitler's too?!
eliot_rosen1
"Really. Which one did he drive and how many did he give as gifts (and are now collectable)." This is from a transcript published on CNN.com "GORANI: Ironically, the Love Bug owes its existence to one of history's most hated tyrants. The story goes Adolf Hitler instructed his engineer, Ferdinand Porsche to design a car that looked like a beetle. About 600 were built before the end of World War II mostly for Nazi officials. Following allied victory, Beetle production was ramped up helping to fuel West Germany's recovery but outside Germany the car took on a whole new meaning. The Love Bug came of age during the hippie revolution of the 1960s and was one of the most striking symbols of the counter culture."

jtdnyc
Can anyone supply documentation of the original post, i.e., that Hitler gave Leicas away as presents? I'm not really interested in whether they have special serial numbers, nor would I be particularly interested in owning one. But as a matter of historical interest, I'd like to know who the recipients were.
eliot_rosen1
I don't know whether Hitler personally gave away any Leica cameras or to whom. However, it is documented that by 1943, pretty much the entire Leitz production of cameras, lenses, and other optics (eg., binoculars)went to the war effort. They went to the Army (Wermacht), Air Force (Luftwaffe), Navy (Kriegsmarine), SS, and various other government agencies. Leica has the records of where these cameras and lenses were delivered. kevin m.
"How many of you drive a Volkswagon. That was Hitler's car..." First, it's Volkswagen. Second, Hitler's car was a Maybach. Third, are you implying, Eliot, that hippies = nazis?
thinkofcole
If, say, Hitler gave Leni Riefenstahl, the gifted German photographer, a Leica, he most likely would have had it engraved with some fancy language --in German, of course, such as this : "Presented to Leni Riefenstahl for her outstanding work in presenting the 1939 Olympics to the World...Adolf Hitler..." If Hitler's black Mercedes was considered to be such a curiosity when it was bought and exhibited by an American entrepreneur some years ago, how would a Leica camera inscribed by Hitler be received-- despite the almost universal attitude about the man himself? regards, bob cole

jack_lo_..._t_o
The damn things would have some value historically. So if you're a museum or a historical society you might want to have them on display for educational purposes. That would be okay wouldn't it? They might interest the dolts who buy the Russian made gold Leicas with the swastica on them. Right after driving out to the suburbs to pay a couple thou for a pit bull puppy. In a Hummer no doubt. Yuck, as someone here said. As a die-hard Bush-basher, I strongly object to equating or identifying GWB to Hitler in any way. It's way off the mark, and it only reflects on the person who makes that association. A more valid and accurate comparison would be any number of Kaisers, Roman emperors, Spanish & French kings, and especially English monarchs. george_b1
Hitler also used a Horsch (sp) that was built especially for him (in addirtion to special armored Mercedes). Several of the old newsreel shots you see of Hitler at those monster rallies showed him standing up in his Horsch, giving that idiot salute to the mases of the believers. kilgore_trout1
there are many counterfeit nazi leicas- -- make sure of your source --- easier to find luftwaffen Robot Cameras... plenty of those on Ebay --- if you are thinking of buying a german military leica or one of ANY historical signifigance (belonging to any famous person or given by any famous person) GET DOCUMENTATION AND AUTHENTICATION!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a big risk sight unseen due to the high number of fakes.... Hippies aren't nazi's - they're usually Marxists.... Truly in this world, is there any product you can buy that isn't tainted by coporate wrongdoing, etc... Example... If you find a south park episode offensive - follow the money - Viacom owns comedy central - Viacom also owns mtv, vhi, and many movie and movie distribution companies, they also own a tv network --- are you going to boycott Tide because they advertise on Viacom networks? Are you going to boycott all products made by that company? Whatever floats your boat, you nazi hippie!(grin) If you can prove it's real, go for it... just expect it to be very expensive!!!! http://www.cameraquest.com/fakerusk.htm http://www.cameraquest.com/kriegsma.htm http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?ht=1&from=R4&satitle=luftwaffen&sacat=625%26catref%3DC6 http://search.ebay.com/luftwaffe_Cameras-Photo_W0QQcatrefZC6QQfromZR4QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfsprZ1QQsacatZ625QQssPageNameZWD8B http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&catref=C6&satitle=robot&sacat=625%26catref%3DC6&bs=Search&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=38117&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi= Robot cameras were very common issue with the german airforce and army
anthony_brookes5
Eliot - That's not quite right. Hitler asked several manufacturers to design a 'peoples' car although Ferdinand Porsche was only a design engineer not a manufacturer. Porsche's design won much to the annoynace of the manufacturers. He was no friend of Hitler but he was in a difficult position, a brilliant Austrian designer, with a family to support. Nevertheless his firm did a lot of work for the Nazi regime.
