mtwhite
I have a few wide and normal Pentax M42 primes which I've never been able to use on my film EOS bodies due to mirror clearance problems. I'm about to get a Rebel XT, which has a smaller mirror (supposedly the same mirror size as the 20D). Does anyone else use wide/normal M42 primes on either DSLR?
I'm particularly interested in super takumar 50/1.4 and 35/3.5 success stories. They're amazing on my spotmatic, and I'd love to use them digitally.
bobatkins
The 50/1.4 is no problem on a 20D However I can't say it gives dramatically better images than the $75 Canon EF 50/1.8 does and you have to put up with manual focus and stop down metering. If you have one, certainly use it, but I wouldn't go out and spend a lot of money on one in the hope of sharper images. http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/manual_focus_EOS.html
benbangerter
The SMC 50/1.4 and 35/3.5 work fine with the EOS 300D. But my favorite of the M42 lenses is the SMC Macro 50/4, which can be found on the auction site for less than $100. Here is an example, a tussock moth caterpillar.

tommyinca
I have both the Takumar 50/1.4, 35/3.5 and a Spotmatic as well. I used both lens on a 300D before I up-grade to a 5D. There are no mirror issue with the 300D for both lens. I even tried the 50/1.4 on the 5D with no mirror issue. For the 5D however, I don't think I plan to use the 35/3.5 with it. It look to close for comfort with the 5D at infinity. The 50/1.4 is a joy to manual focus on the 5D.
