ned1
I bought a 20mm 2.8 off of ebay and it just arrived. I noticed that it did not have any text on the inside rim of the lens the way my other Nikon lenses do. Is this a fake or normal for this lens? rick_beets
Some have text others don't. Many of the new lenses put the serial numbers on the lens body rather than the front as per the older lenses. I have never heard of "bootleg" Nikkors, I think you can rest assured. mark_jordan3
Not all do, specifically I have an old 28mm AI that has the text on the rim of the focusing ring. I would imagine it mostly has to do with the lens barrel design...some wide angles do not have a lot of real estate around the lens to accomodate the text. ned1
Hmm, no serial number either.
stwrtertbsratbs5
Does it produce good images? Robert
lee hamiel
Edward: AF ? From the ones I've seen there are no serial #'s visible within the front rim. After reading your post I looked at some more & did not see any #'s either. My son has the AF version & when I talk to him later I'll have him look as well. david_kelly1
Before concluding that there are no numbers take a magnifying glass or a loupe and in oblique light look at the aperture ring on the side opposite the f-stop numbers. Nikon switched to really tiny laser-engraved serial numbers a few years ago, possibly to foil thieves, possibly just to be annoying. So the serial numbers can be hard to locate, let alone read. Wish they would use the same laser technology, set larger, to give us real engraved DOF index marks and numbers instead of cheap lithographed ones that rub off. guy_p
Edward - do a visual comparison and serial # check here: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html#
Michael R Freeman
If it is an AF Nikkor, then the 20/2.8 has no text or markings inside the front rim. The serial number is etched into the aperture ring (black on black), 180 degrees opposite of the f/numbers. You need a strong light to see it. If your lens looks like this, then it is genuine. Both the AF and AF-D have the same marlings (save for the "D"). http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/afd2028.jpg
