Thumbnails on Portfolio look bad

Recommended Posts

The thumbnails images <ahref="http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?

folder_id=583349">on this page are all noisy and splotchy

looking. Even when they are opened they dont look like they should.

Only when they are made Larger do they finally look like they are

supposed to. Has anyone else had this happen? I downsized them in PS

Elements just like I do all the time, but other pictures Ive posted

look fine in both the thumbnail size and the full size.

Brad, It looks like jpeg artifacts to me. I'm not sure if you can save file info (history) in Elements, or if you had it turned on, but if so you can start your investigation there. BTW, the full size images also show the artifacts; perhaps a little too much sharpening or repeated use of bicubic sharper when downsampling. It looks like you got some nice shots of the car though. Brad,

Most photo programs including Adobe Elements/CS2 create web thumbnails and images at 72 dpi which is standard for low resolution computer screens. However, most high resoultions screens are closer to 100 dpi and most of the photo websites I frequent (including my own) size their images and thumbnails at 300 dpi for crisper display.

Over sharpening and too much jpg compression will also degrade a jpeg file -- everytime a jpeg file is opened and then saved the image is degraded that much more.

DPI is unrelated to the on-screen viewing. At 100%, pixels are pixels.

Your images on photo.net are sized at 200x133. Is this the size you saved for thumbnails, or did you upload an alternate size and photo.net is doing resizing on the fly?

Here are two images, the first is 25dpi, the second is 3000 dpi, however you'll notice they're both 200x133 pixels:

yes, there are jpeg artifacts present, but you'll see they're the same in both.
