20D iPod and iPod camera connector

I just purchased a new 30Gb iPod with the iPod Camera Connector.

According to Apple's website, this should allow me to download

pictures from my camera to my iPod for storage until I upload them to

my computer for processing. Each time I connect the iPod to the

camera, it displays 'Unsupported Device'. I just spent a half hour

on the phone with a very nice young lady from Apple who's biggest

insight for the evening was "I've had a crazy day". To her benefit,

she tried really hard. She found a document that said I needed iPod

software ver 1.1 and my new iPod and their website only offer 1.0. I

upgraded my 20D firmware from 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 and still get the same

result. Am I missing something silly here? Does anyone else have

this combo working? If not, this thing is going back.

I am not sure if the IPOD only supports JPG and not RAW - does anyone know?

ipod downloads all the files that are on memory card. but it cannot display RAW files.

 

in my oppinion iPod is a very good utility for amateur photographer. I bought one for myself for travelling. I don't make huge ammount pictures on holidays and iPod is just fine for me. and I can also use it for entertainment. and it very stylish :)

After I called Apple, I decided to carry it to the local Apple store to see if they could do any better. After working with different combinations of their equipment and mine, I let them reformat the iPod using a Macintosh instead of the PC like I use at home. It started working with my 20D. This didn't really help since I only use Mac at work and work with images on my PC at home. I took it home and again reformatted it using my PC. This time all works fine.

 

I'm guessing that the original formatting from my PC had flaws. If this happens to anyone else, try reformatting with your PC first. If that does not work and you have access to a Mac or an Apple store, reformat it with the Mac and then again with the PC. I don't think fixing the problem had anything to do with formatting from a Mac, but I mention this as it was part of the process that got mine working.

 

Another note about using the iPod for storing photos. Many of the reviews stated how slow it was and how it ate up batteries. I think this is because most cameras have a USB 1.0 interface. The 20D has USB 2.0 and the transfer rate is much faster with low battery consumption. I have not ran any tests, but I did copy 75 raw files somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. If anyone is curious, let me know and I'll actually time it. Would the iPod storage be adequate for a die hard pro? I have no idea. It is good for me as it is an easy way to back up files on the go or when camping. It will not display raw files, but it will store them for you. I have started shooting raw + very small jpeg. This gives me the preview on the iPod and also the raw file for processing back home.
