W/NW Views from the 'top' of your town.

Please forgive me the fact that these were taken through thick toughened glass (that has a greenish tint) with a fair amount of rain streaking and other crud on them and which are sloping in towards the viewer causing goodness knows what reflections and distortions. Best of a bad job I am afraid.

Yes, our city (Portsmouth) is also tiny by USA standards at only 180,000 people. Portsmouth is quite a new city having only held it's charter for 811 years since 1194 when King Richard I awarded it.

England's smallest city (with an actual city charter) is Wells in Somerset with some 11,000 people.

Beautiful shots... This one was also taken through a window, from the Bank of America

building. The Transamerica Pyramid in the foreground, Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill

small in the background. (A true "top of the world" shot of San Francisco would probably

be taken from Twin Peaks.)
00E3HD-26319284.jpg.1025c516abd032d96d3ca48ae6f19e84.jpg

Not exactly the top of the town (which is in this picture), but from the terrace of my old apartment on the 16th floor (which in NYC isn't much!) Still, I always enjoyed this view, I was sorry to have to leave. Now I look out on trees and brownstones. Sorry, no Leica involved in the taking of this photograph!

Could you incorporate the rain streaks and crud as part of the

picture, accept the reality of the situation, go with the flow, and

make something out of it? As is these are pretty straight records

of a city, but not too interesting photographically. Probably all you

were after.

Ray, thanks. Yes I tried to 'make something' of this one yesterday....

http://d6d2h4gfvy8t8.cloudfront.net/3844138-lg.jpg

However it was my first time up this newly opened structure. The people were mostly elderly and many and just gawping. No real people interest and nothing much going off in terms of interesting weather.

I must admit I chickened out of using the polariser when I saw the patterns in the windows but next time I may go back with it and try to exploit them (and hope there are more interesting characters) and play with closer shots and different DOF effects etc.

If I can get permission (they even search wallets for 'bombs' understandably) I will try and get a tripod up there during the next thunderstorm. (Assuming it opens during thenderstorms as the risk of fluctuating power to the operation of the lifts may induce them to close during such weather.)

Yesterday was basically just a recce. More ideas will come along on future trips. Thanks for the thought Ray.
