The first one looks more like a Ladder to a nowhere then a Stairway to Heaven.

How does heaven look like? Nowhere, I suppose?

Collective memory at work. The reference is to Jacob's dream of the Heavenly Ladder. A 12 c

icon from Mt Sinai shows the ladder, which - according to a homily by John Klimax - monks

must climb defying the demons of temptatin to achieve heavenly salvation. The icon was on

display some years at the Glory of Byzantium exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.
