roger krueger
I just got a new Lexar Firewire reader. It works great with my 1G and 4G 80x Lexar cards as well as my 2G "plain" SanDisk. But when I put in my "pqi Hi-Speed 40" 2G CF in (Fry's $99 special), it never mounted. When I gave up and removed it a couple of minutes later it was so hot I could barely hold it tightly enough to get it out (the Lexar reader is a snug fit and has no eject button). I let it cool for a few minutes and tried it again, with similar results. How can it draw enough current off the Firewire port to get this hot? I assumed I'd fried something, but, amazingly, the reader still works fine with my other cards, and the grossly overheated card still works fine in my camera and my elderly Microtech USB reader. The data's intact and everything. WTF happened here?
gary_berg
I have seen mention of this a few times, always with the Lexar Firewire reader. I thought it was a problem with only old firewire readers, but you say you just purchased this one? Some CFs and the Lexar Firewire reader don't seem to get along. Buy a new reader...
