PS, my actions are gone....

Recommended Posts

My PS 7.0 was messing up on start-up so I re-named the preferences

file. Done this a couple times in the past with no issues. This

time though I got some kind of message about how it could not load

the actions. So, the actions palette was empty. I can do a search

for .atn files and re-load a lot of actions but the ones I created

through the years(about a dozen or so) cannot be found anywhere.

Anyone have any advice on where to find and re-load my actions? I

found .atn file called Default but when loaded it only had one

action, that was not one I created, and no others.

Richard, I'm sure you've probably already tried this, but if you go into Windows 'search' and can remember any of the action name, put it in with asterisks for what you're not sure of. I have found lots of 'lost' stuff like that. Just a thought. Good luck. Joe

Did you actually save them to disk? If not, they are gone. You can build actions in

Photoshop which are stored in memory until you actually write them to disk. This is kind

of lame if you ask me but that is how Adobe does it. Until you actually save the .atn files,

you can lose them.

Actually, unless you specifically save a set (folder) of Actions they seem to be saved in your preferences. So they are there from session to session until you lose your preferences. Saving groups of Actions is always a good idea.

Just to test, why not copy the renamed preferences file and see if the Actions are not still there? Do not move or rename the preferences file, just copy and rename it so that you have a backup. If the actions are there, then select the folders/sets and click the tiny right arrow in a circle button on the palette and save them. Then reset your preferences to how you want them and reload the Actions.

You have my sympathy, I learned this one the hard way too.

enjoy,

Sean
