dlundin828
Yeah, it sounds like their buddies, but they're not. I bought a used Coolscan 8000 which I think would work fine... except it isn't. I've emailed Nikon but haven't received a reply, FYI. I had to install a Firewire port... it isn't Nikon's so that may be an issue in play. My computer recognizes the Coolscan... you can see it in device manager. But when I try to load Nikon Scan 4, it hangs. Before I hooked up the scanner to the computer, I could at least read the help page. If Nikon Scan 4 does load, I can't select film types, etc... it's all grayed out. I uninstalled Nikon Scan 4, clearing out the registries, and reinstalled it following the manual to the letter. Still, Scan isn't working. Any clues? Please? Help? danny_liao
I would try using the USB port too. I have a 8000 and I'm running it on my mac using the standard firewire port (not Nikon's port) and it works fine. Also, is the green LED light flashing when you launch Nikon Scan? dlundin828
As far as I know, there is no USB option. It's Firewire only. I do have an Apple ibook that I can try hooking it up to to see how that goes.

eric friedemann
Diana, I had to install Nikon's Firewire port that came with the scanner: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=006n9R
kit_chong
Are the any Windows Firewire drivers to install or that needs reinstalling with the latest version? Do you turn on the scanner first before turning on the computer?
mendel_leisk
Try Vuescan? Just to see what happens.
dlundin828
Since I got it used, I didn't get the Nikon port. Bummer. I don't know if Nikon will provide me one (I don't care if I have to buy it, but it's hard to find the ones Nikon "recommended" for the 8000 now... they're not being sold). I read your travails, Eric. Did you ever get it to scan faster? I don't care too much about how fast it scans... just want it to work right now! david_littleboy__tokyo__ja
There should be an exe called "regsweeper.exe" in the Nikonscan directory. Run it and try again.
dlundin828
Well, the good news is the scanner works fine with my ibook. It's not ideal since I don't think the screen is good enough to do my editing but I can transfer it to my PC. At least it's a workable solution until I can get the right firewire card, which seems to be the problem.
