coolmingli
Recently bought a D2x, and I need few lenses, I know I will buy the 70-200VR, but can not decide on the wide end, Can you guys give some comments on the above 2 lenses? Thanks very much!
vgoklani
I bought the 17-35 for my D70, but now I curse at myself wishing I had bought something longer. Please don't make the same mistake.
ShunCheung
Unless you need to use this wide-angle zoom on a film body also, otherwise, I wonder why you even consider getting the 17-35mm/f2.8. I have both of those lenses; I got the 17-35 a few years ago for my film bodies and added the 17-55 DX last year for my DSLR. See the following thread from last October for futher discussion on this topic: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=009jVw
nedevermac.com
I bought a 17-55mm for my d70 but I bought it at a point in my life (3 months ago) where I thought I wasn't going to be shooting much if any film. Now that my d70 is in the shop, I've been shooting film and remembering what I liked about it. I really should have gotten a 17-35 because right now I have a $1200 piece of glass that's useless until I get my d70 back.
patricks
on a d2x - 17-55 without a doubt.
James Kazan
I own the 17-35 and I just love it. It is my everyday lens.
Jim
James Kazan
I should of added that I'm using it on a D70. Here is just one example of it.
nedevermac.com
Also, if it means anything at all, the focus and zoom rings on a 17-35 are much smoother and imo placed more ergonomically than on the 17-55.
ShunCheung
Noah, the 17-55mm/f2.8 DX should work ok on your film body as a 28-55mm zoom. I have tested mine on my F5 body at various focal lengths. It might not be ideal but it is far from useless on a film body.
EricM
17-55 without a doubt. and with the 2x crop factor, you have one sweet fast 4x zoom
RaymondC
If digital is main body get the DX lens. I have a 18-35 and its reach sucks. I think inevitably you need both a DX lens and a FF lens for digital and the other for film. just makes sense. in the middle thou, the 35-70/2.8 is one sweet lens. a shame no equivalent with DX. paul_sokal___dallas__tx
I have the 17-55 and it almost never leaves my D2X. I agree the rings are not as smooth as the 17-35, but that's not an issue with me. I workout regularly so I have the strength to zoom the DX lens :-)
bob_cunningam
The 28-70 2.8 and a 12-24 4 make a fantastic combination. I like the 28-70 better than the 17-55 for what I shoot, it is built better, is sharper and has better bokeh than the 17-55 I had.
ShunCheung
It depends on what you shoot. If you are talking about portraits, the 28-70mm/f2.8 can work really well on a DSLR. My view is that it is an event lens on film bodies; i.e. wide to short tele. On a DSLR, 28mm is simply not very wide, especially indoors when you don't have sufficient room to move around. The 17-55mm/f2.8 DX is essentially the digital equivalent of the 28-70 for film and it is great for weddings, etc. I already had the 17-35 and 28-70 from a few years ago. I added the 17-55 last year mainly for event photography.
