mr._smith
Up to till now, 8mp digicam had a resolution of 2448 x 3268 pixel on an 8.8mm x 6.6mm sensor like the 8mp Nikon 8400 There is also the 7.1mp cameras like the Canon Powershot G6 with a resolution of 2304 x 3072 pixels with an 7.20mm x 5.35mm sensor. Now come the new Olympus SP-350 8mp camera. That's right an 8mp camera with a resolution of 2304 x 3072 on an 7.20mm x 5.35mm photo sensor. How did an 7.1mp camera became an 8.0mp camera ? Simple. Marketing Hype.
mr.wind-upbird
It sounds like they just put more pixels on the same-size sensor. It is possible, you know.
robert_meyers
I believe that is an error. They released a 7.1 MP and 8 MP (similar camera), and prob. mixed the info on their site.

basscheffers
And it never occured to you the resolution could be a type and it actualy is an 8MP camera? I know it's popular to portray Olympus as evil scammers, but you should not be jumping to conclusions. The olympus.co.uk website lists the SP-350 as having an output of 3,264 x 2,488, well over 8 million pixels.
basscheffers
Olympus UK website.
Maybe there is a US version that is only a 7.1MP marketted as eight because Olympus thinks american consumers are not as informed as their European forefathers.
Or maybe they mixed up the resolution with that of the also new SP-310, which is 7.1 and has the exact same amount of pixels you describe.
Remmeber the website you link to have only copied it from the Olympus site or press release, too stupid to do even the match themselves and challende olympus... dxphoto
just remember, the sensor in point-shot style camera has no way to compare thoes in dSLR's. Please be aware, in terms of image quality, the number or pixel is not the only afect here. And we are not talking about lenses here. the size of the sensor matters way more than the # of pixels. mr._smith
D notLast, I fully understand what you're saying, but a comparison of digicam vs dslr what not the object of my post which rather relates to marketing hype. And for those who'd like more info on sensor http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/key=Sensor_Sizes
mr._smith
Bas, The UK Olympus site shows the same camera: an 8mp Olympus SP-350 with 7.1mp specifications. Sensor size 1/1.8?? CCD with 8.3 million pixels. Resolution: 3264 x 2488. Same sensor size (1/1.8") and resolution (3,072 x 2,304) as the Olympus C-7070 7.1mp digicam. Marketing is fully aware that pixel count sells and they are not shy about it even if they have to stretch specifications a bit.
basscheffers
Huh, I don't see it! The link I posted goes straight to the SP-350 specs and they say the top resolution is "3,264 x 2,488" or 8.1MP. The SP-310 is listed as having "3,072 x 2,304", which is 7.1MP, just like they say it is. I am not understanding something you are saying?
steve_swinehart
This is earth shattering news. I'm so glad you wasted 1's and 0's to bring this to everyone's attention - especially since your wrong. If you look carefully, there are two separate cameras. One is the the model SP-310 with 7.1 MP (3072 x 2304), and the second is the SP-350 with 8.0 MP (3264 x 2488). Now, you do the math. scott_eaton
I know it's popular to portray Olympus as evil scammers
No, just ignorant, and too cheap to buy a legitimate dSLR.
Olympus could produce a traingle shaped sensor and it would till be called 'alternative superiority'. basscheffers
Scott, take your pill. Good. Now, we were not actualy talking about Olympus DSLRs. Save your energy for some other time.
