jams
Hey guys! I was just wondering what the difference between the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and the newer Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 MACRO version. The older one is $150 cheaper...is there any optical difference? Please help me out!
todd peach seattle, washi
According to Sigma's site, yes, there's a difference. They added another element, 110g to the weight, cut the max mag from 1:7.8 down to 1/3.5 and min focus from 180cm to 100cm.
aaron_lee___minneapolis__m
The only thing it is missing is VR/IS. I had the older version and absolutely loved it! I had to trade it for the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR for low light weddings. The only thing that bugs me about these long lenses is that you have to be almost 6 feet away to focus. Looks like the new Sigma made that about 3.3 feet! Yay! Go Sigma! Aaron Lee
walterh
James are you talking about the APO - HSM lens? I use this lens (close focus 180cm) for several years now on film and on D70 and optically it is excellent, slightly better on the D70 than on film. (Forget about the 1.4 converter that is offered by Sigma.) The Nikons are mechanically more robust and the newer VR versions also have an edge optically (incredible beats excellent ^^) but at a price. I got several primes in this range to cover best optics so the Sigma was my choice.
