john sypal
<p>"Japan Photo Contest Monthly" is a B5 sized 300+ page photography magazine that comes out (you guessed it) monthly, (where?) in Japan. From a portfolio titled "The Difference Between" I've got 6 pictures on 4 pages of the October 2006 issue:</p> <p><img id="image674" src="http://kenshukan.net/john/archives/photokon122.jpg" alt="photokon122.jpg" /></p> <p><img id="image675" src="http://kenshukan.net/john/archives/photokon123.jpg" alt="photokon123.jpg" /></p> <p><img id="image676" src="http://kenshukan.net/john/archives/photokon124.jpg" alt="photokon124.jpg" /></p> <p><img id="image677" src="http://kenshukan.net/john/archives/photokon125.jpg" alt="photokon125.jpg" /></p> <p>Taken with various Leicas, a Bessa, and a Nikon F2. If you are in Japan and find yourself in a bookstore from September 20 to October 19th flip through a copy and take a look. For everyone else here are some basic scans from the magazine.</p><p>It is hard to read from these scans, but the text at the bottom of the last page reads:</p><p>"I photograph to try to understand how reality is transformed through photography.</p><p>This is an investigation concerning what is around me, and how that documentation of Japan in turn affects my conception of this country.</p><p>I often wonder, what is it that is between myself and this country, besides my camera?</p><p>Rather than answers I am interested in the questions that these photographs ask."</p>
leon chang
Good for you John! Japan is a beautiful country. Using a Leica IN Japan must be even more rewarding. I can only envy you.
Alex_Es
John, it's good to see you publishing. I know this journal and have avoided it because of the "contesty"(uniform and bland) sort of stuff that they generally publish. It is really nice to see these people publishing your work, which is certainly a very high cut above the average. Did you send in prints? What size? Do they they accept scanned film shots? I'll absolutely got a copy as soon as I can. Am wondering if you have tried Asahi Camera or Nippon Camera. Without going into details, I sense these journals have an anti-gaijin bias. Any experience with these?

john sypal
I've taken prints to 4 magazines in tokyo- Camera Magazine, Asahi Camera, Phat Photo, and Photo Contest. I know a photographer who sometimes is asked to judge/select photos that have been sent to the contest part of Photo Contest, and his connection also helped with the exposure in Camera Magazine. Alex, I took my Nebraska Portfolio to Asahi in early 2005 and after a somewhat dis-interested looking through what I had with me it was suggested that I ganbarimasho for my photography, and the Phat photo folks thought it would be swell if I taught them english. I would not mind that part so much. Every time I have gone to a magazine it has been with a box of workprints but what I think they really want to see is a cohesive portfolio. To be fair though, the editor who I met at Asahi has since left and the next one I met at an exhibition said he would publish some work if I had an upcoming show, which I do not at the moment. Since you are in Kansai, next time you are in Osaka go to the Nikon Salon and pick up an application for an exhibition. That would be a good first step.
