Yashica 12 Sacrifices Itself For a Maxxum 7.

Recommended Posts

They just don't make em like they used to:

Well took some classics on holiday along with the new guy plastic

Maxxum 7. Along on the trip and now very glad of it, was my big tank

the old Yashica 12 TLR. Turns out this guy saved me some major

misfortune. Went fishing with the boy and father in-law. Of course I

took an arsenal of cameras along as this lake has tons of things to

keep me and the gang of one eyed bandits busy. Not much of a

fisherman. While unloading I set the camera bag and tripod down next

to the truck. Of course the worst thing imaginable happens. F.I.

backs up the truck while turning and runs right over my camera bag.

Ohhhh Noooooooo. I am scared to look. I don't want to know.......

What a sick feeling. In the bag were, Maxxum 7 28/75 sigma lens,

Yashica 12, Zeiss Ikon Nettar 521/16. Kodak Retina IIIc, Ugly Kiev 4

with chicken pox, Minolta Auto meter IV. Here is the damage. Yashica

with slightly Bent lens hood and Sigma lens broken off the Maxxum

mount very small crack on top deck of Maxxum. Lucky for me if you can

say that, the Yashcia is a tank and saved the rest of the bunch. The

Sigma was an El Cheapo lens and pretty much saved the Maxxum plastic

body by breaking easily. No noticeable other damage. Never want to

go through that ever again. Needless to say not sure who felt worse,

me or the father in-law. Not sure which cameras I was more concerned

with.......

Will be posting some pics from the Retina and Kiev shortly.

Anyone else have some horror stories to share?

Travis , I am sorry to hear the diseased Kiev with the nasty skin problem made

it out alive. I never backed over a camera bag, but we did have a

photographer at our sister paper put a 300 2.8 EDIF on the roof of his car and

then drive away with it . In his rear view mirror he noticed cars swerving

behind him as it hit the pavement going 20+ MPH. May it RIP

Not photo related, but when I was in college, one of my classmates laid down his vintage Sousaphone directly behind another band member's Saab after a parade.

I told him he had better move it, but he was exhausted from the 4th of July heat. I was turning to move it for him and get him some cold water when I heard the crunch...

Whilst being a proffesional violist I left my viola in the back of my friends car, went back a hour later and it was gone, very expensive loss. I am glad it was stolen because I got the insurance and later became a violinamker!

On a more photographic note, I symapathise with your horror story.

Cheers.

That all depends on how he is behaving :) In this case he felt pretty bad and is was my fault for not telling him I left my stuff there for 2 minutes. So F.I woudl be the father inlaw version. Lucky for me hasn't go tthe other F.I tag, yet! All in all he is a good guy. He does get impatient when it comes to fishing.

Travis - thank you for solving my dillema - I have a Yashica 12 with a broken shutter and have been wondering if I should have it repaired, or use it as a paperweight. From now on I'll carry it in my camera bag as protection against old men and trucks!

I love the 12 and is still works great. Thought for sure glass was going to be broken or light lid bent in. I guess when the tire hit it rolled over and the lens hood got bent against something but that is light aluminum only. THe only other thing I can see is it slightly bent or moved the top cover that says yashica a bit. I belive that is just bolted on and can be corrected. this would have been an entirely different story had this camer not been along..
