New Canon Pro Digital SLR Questions

Hello!

<p>

This in reference to the canon news link, posted below.

<p>

There is talk of a new pro level canon digital SLR that uses a full 24x36 frame. There is also a posting about the D3, a nww digital SLR that repaces the D30. Are the two the same thing or are they two different cameras?

<p>

Sorry about the annoyance, but I was also wondering about how long after October's expected annoncement the one (or two) new digital SLRs are expected to ship.

<p>

Thanks.

<p>

Matthew,

<p>

This question was posed under the thread heading of: new canon

product (legnum), in the Canon EOS FAQ forum -- you might want to

read that one for additional comments.

<p>

Yes, the pro model is supposed to be a 6 mega-pixel full frame

design, but it's all hearsay (no official statements from Canon).

<p>

I thought D3 was a misprint in an article, but the French online

magazine <a

href="http://eosseries.ifrance.com/eosseries/lenscanon/news_en.htm">EO

S Series</a> states that the D3 will be a lower cost replacement for

the D30 -- I frankly find it hard to believe. If Canon could make the

D30 cheaper, they would just reduce the price. They may release a

less expensive model that has fewer features/lower specs.

<p>

No idea what Canon is planning to call their pro digital

body...perhaps the EOS 1d? :-)

<p>

No idea of actual ship dates. Canon still hasn't officially announced

either body.

I doubt that Canon is developing a replacement for the D30, that

french site is questionable at times.

<p>

Anyways what I DO believe is that canon is developing something in

the lines of a Digital "Rebel" as an entry digital, with the D30

being the upper amature model and the hopefully soon to be reliesed

Pro model the Pro camera.

Jake,

<p>

I agree with you, and can certainly visualize Canon taking a three

tiered approach in the digital SLR market:

<p>

<li>1. Entry level <i><b>"Rebel EOS"</i></b>

<li>2. Mid-level <i><b>"EOS D30"</i></b>

<li>3. Pro-level <i><b>"EOS 1d (or whatever it will be

called)"</i></b>

<p>

I think the current iteration of the D30 lacks features that it

should have to be the mid-level body -- like ECF (or at least red LED

focus point indicators). If the Entry level "Rebel" was priced near

the G1/G2, I'd be all over it!

Jake,

<p>

I agree! As long as the price point is comparible to other Rebels

(<i>after all, we're talking an entry level digital EOS SLR

here</i>)! And, I'd want it to accept CompactFlash type II memory

cards, like the G1/G2 & D30! That way you could move up while keeping

the same memory modules. Some of the digital Canon P&S's only accept

type I, which rules out the IBM Microdrives.

There's another rumour that there's to be two new cameras to replace

the D30, in addition to the EOS-D1V (I have heard that is the name of

the new pro digital). They are said to be an EOS D7, and an EOS D70.

The D7 will be an upgrade of the D30, while the D70 will be cheaper,

and probably in the 2MP class. This is a guess btw, and it is rumour,

so there's a good chance that NONE of this will happen. :-).

September 17th is said to be announcement day.
