Digital ICE with Kodachrome: scanning with the film flipped?

Recommended Posts

I haven't tried it. It shouldn't make a difference. The "problem" with Kodachrome is two fold. The cyan dye absorption extends into the infrared. The relief image is also detected by the IR channel. The dye absorption wont make any difference if the film is flipped. The relief image might make a difference depending on the optics of the scanner.

In practice the sharpness loss with ICE is somewhere between barely detectable and nonexistent. I choose to use ICE with Kodachrome.

Generic use of the term "Kodachrome" can be misguiding as Kodachrome vintages respond differently to infared/Ice....some are problems, some not.

The problem isn't "sharpness loss," rather its the noise that occurs with some vintages of Kodachrome.

I have scans of Kodachrome slides from 1946 through 2006. All of them were scaned with Digital ICE turned on with my Minolta Dimage Scan Elite scanner. From time to time I try turning ICE off to see if it makes a difference in image quality. I have yet to find a problem.
