Going to Montreal this weekend

Montreal is as photogenic a city as any.

St. Catherine & St. Lawrence. There is a pool hall/steamie joint frequented by street types, I think it's called "Casanova". The denizens look scary but they can be warmed up. A friend brought her kids in once, realised she had made a terrible mistake, but by the time her steamies (hot dogs)were ready, her kids were in the back getting lessons in the use of the pool cue from a biker and a transvestite. East on St. Catherine's is the gay village which has some seedy spots. Most of the gritty stuff radiates from that corner . It's a very walkable city, very lively at night, going up till about 3 a.m.

Pointe St. Charles, used to be the Irish section of town, interesting and decrepit architecture, some gentrification,, but still worked by streetwalkers. You can walk across a bridge to there from Vieux Montreal, which has a fairly lively club scene, but is not in any way raw or gritty.

Way North on St. Laurent Blvd.(a looong walk) is Little Italy. Lots of cafe/pool hall hangouts, wonderful family restaurants; La Dolce Vita is lived in the streets at night.

Go to Mountain St. and have some of the best onion soup au gratin in the world and an

order of escargots; don't fail to mop up with the crusty French bread. Wash it all down

with some Molsons and forget about photography.

Place Ville Ste. Marie (underground mall) is just as good for soup and snails.

There you may also see Quebecoise chicas who are uniquely stylish and fun to

photograph. Find them in droves all over downtown or shoot the on the Metro.

If you still insist, go down by the railroad yards near the St. Lawrence and shoot some

industrial / railway shots.

If you shoot color, the end of May is a riot of color as the city is awash in tulips in bloom,

all over the place. If you shoot b/w, bring color anyway.
