terence_tong1
I just got my 17-40 and discovered there's a rubber ring around the metal lens mount. presumablly for dust/moisture prevention. How come my 70-200 f4 doesn't have it? is it a newer addition? because my old 100-300L, didn't have one either. Can you add on yourself? buy the ring from Canon and glue it on? Thanks TT
gluteal cleft
Not all "L" lenses are weather-sealed.
franklin_polk
You could buy a rubber ring (although not from Canon, they would have to be fitted to a specfic lens), but it really is not worth it, as for weather sealing on your other lenses, you'd also have to put gaskets for the distance window, weather seal the focus ring, etc. Weather sealing is more than just a ring around the lens mount. In addition, for full weather sealing, with your 17-40mm, you also have to add a filter.
PuppyDigs
Also, for a really tight seal, the lens mount on the 1D series sports an 0-ring as well. However, I'm sure the single seal on the lens is helpful even if you don't have a 1V or 1D- series body. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
jcolwell
You can find a list of rubber ringed lenses in FAQ 17 at the PhotoZone Canon FAQ
terence_tong1
Is there a rhyme or reason to which lens is Tropicalized? Wouldn't one use a 70-200 f/4 more out door? or because 17-40 is the wide angle/landscape lens, it's used as outdoor landscape lens? Thanks for the FAQ! good list
steve_dunn2
Yes, there's a rhyme or reason. The IS superteles were the first Canon lenses to have this level of dust- and water-resistance, including the rubber O-ring. AFAIK, all L lenses introduced since then have also included these features. Your 70-200 and 100-300 both predate these features.
