nabeeko
figure so that I do not freak out when I am actually paying? I have a 70-200mm 2.8L USM (non-IS) that cost me a pretty penny years back. Unfortunately, in the dark, I rubbed the front element with my UV filter while screwing it of. Now it has a big scratch on the front which I can tell will cost me another pretty penny =(. Does anyone have an ballpark figure on how much the pretty penny will cost me? Would it be through Canon? Thank you. Steve
bobatkins
Ask Canon. They will tell you. My guess is $200+. The scratch will have far more effect on resale value of the lens and the quality of your sleep than it will on the images.
patrick tom
Hello...I've yet to have seriously scratched my front element...thank goodness...from what I've read...unless it's a serious scratch it won't affect imaging all that much...cost to change front element is about 300 bucks...good luck
terry_smith2
I stopped using protective filters years ago unless it's raining hard or something similar. Have you taken any pix since this happened? That would let you see if there's really a difference or not. I have an early example of this lens that's really an old war horse by now. It's taken all sorts of abuse over the years. If you shae, you can hear somethibg moving inside yet it still works perfectly and keeps giving me supyrb images.
camilla
I have a very big scratch on the front element on my 70-200/2,8, looks like someone hit a hard corner with it. I bought it that way, used, and image quality is superb. Don't bother paying for a new front element if you're going to keep the lens.
yakim_peled1
I'd never buy a lens with a scratch on it. Horses for courses. If I were you I'd replace it or (if you have the funds) sell and buy the IS version. Happy shooting, Yakim.
